Outlier - Brian Johnson & Patrick Lee
Exhibition Opening reception - Friday, March 13, 6–8 pm at Mark Rengers Gallery
Every exhibition is the culmination of many conversations. Conversations between artists and their work, between past and present, and between the private act of making and the public act of sharing.
This series began as a way to slow down and listen to those conversations. We met Patrick Lee through his voice and his ideas. We stepped back into history through John Singer Sargent to understand the lineage of observation and presence. And we arrived with Brian Johnson, whose journey reminds us how deeply painting can shape a life.
Now the conversation moves into the gallery.
The exhibition brings Patrick Lee and Brian Johnson together not simply as two painters, but as two distinct ways of seeing. Their works share a commitment to attention, to the emotional weight of light, and to the belief that painting can hold experience in a way nothing else can.
To accompany the exhibition, you can watch the full conversations with both artists below. These interviews offer a deeper look into their processes, their influences, and the personal paths that led them to this moment.

Standing in front of the work, the throughline of the series becomes clear. Painting is not only about representation. It is about perception, resilience, and the human impulse to make meaning from what we see and what we live.
We hope you will experience the exhibition in person and spend time with the work slowly. The paintings reward attention, just as the artists who made them have built their lives through it.
This is where the series ends.
This is where the looking begins.
See you at the Exhibition!
