Series: The Places We Keep

Part 2: Who Decides What Is Worth Painting?

In Part 1 of this series, we explored why places matter.

We considered how a street, a neighborhood, a river, or a familiar home can become part of our identity. Long before artists arrive with sketchbooks and paintboxes, people form memories. They fall in love, raise families, build businesses, and create communities. The places where those stories unfold become meaningful.

But that raises another question.

If ordinary places have always mattered to the people who live there, when did artists begin to believe they were worthy of being painted?

Trout Fishing at Scalp Level, 1878 By George Hetzel

The answer takes us to nineteenth-century France.

For centuries, European painting was dominated by grand subjects. Artists painted kings, saints, biblical stories, mythological heroes, and dramatic historical events. Landscapes appeared, but often as backgrounds for something considered more important.

Then a group of French painters began looking elsewhere.

Rather than painting palaces and heroes, they painted forests, fields, ponds, country roads, and small villages. They became known as the Barbizon painters, named after the village of Barbizon near the Forest of Fontainebleau.

What made their work remarkable was not simply their technique.

It was their belief.

They believed ordinary places were worthy of attention.

A dirt road could be beautiful.

A stand of trees could be meaningful.

A quiet afternoon in the countryside could deserve the same consideration as a king’s portrait.

Today that idea feels obvious. In the mid-1800s, it was revolutionary.

That philosophy eventually crossed the Atlantic and found fertile ground in Western Pennsylvania.

Among the artists influenced by these ideas was a young painter named George Hetzel.

Paint Creek at Scalp Level, c.1890 by George Hetzel

Hetzel studied in Europe and returned with a growing appreciation for landscape painting and direct observation from nature. Rather than searching for dramatic subjects, he began painting the hills, streams, forests, and rural communities of Western Pennsylvania.

In the years that followed, Hetzel and a group of fellow artists traveled throughout the region, often gathering around the small community of Scalp Level near Johnstown. Together they became known as the Scalp Level School, one of the first significant art movements associated with Western Pennsylvania.

What is striking about many of their paintings today is how familiar their subjects feel.

They painted rivers.

Wooded hillsides.

Farm fields.

Country roads.

Streams winding through the landscape.

To modern viewers, these scenes may appear quiet and unassuming. Yet that was precisely the point.

The artists were making an argument.

They were suggesting that beauty was not reserved for famous landmarks or distant destinations.

Beauty existed here.

In places people passed every day.

In landscapes that felt familiar.

In the ordinary rhythms of daily life.

More than a century later, artists continue to ask the same question. What places around us deserve attention? What parts of our communities are so familiar that we risk overlooking them? The answers may differ from one generation to the next, but the impulse remains remarkably similar.

In many ways, these artists taught people how to look.

They encouraged viewers to slow down and notice the light filtering through trees, the reflection of clouds in a stream, or the changing colors of the Pennsylvania hills throughout the seasons.

The paintings were not simply records of the landscape.

They were invitations to pay attention.

That invitation remains surprisingly relevant today. As our nation approaches its 250th anniversary, communities across the country are reflecting on the places that have shaped their stories. Artists continue to play an important role in that process, helping us see our towns, neighborhoods, and shared spaces with fresh eyes.

More than a century later, that idea remains surprisingly relevant.

We live in a culture that constantly encourages us to look elsewhere. We scroll through photographs of distant cities, dream vacations, and spectacular destinations. Yet many of the places that shape our lives are much closer to home.

The neighborhood where we walk the dog.

The road we drive every morning.

The park where our children play.

The town where we know the names of shop owners and neighbors.

These places may not seem remarkable until we pause long enough to truly see them.

That is one of the enduring gifts of George Hetzel and the painters of the Scalp Level School.

They remind us that beauty is often hiding in plain sight.

Perhaps that is why artists continue to return to the same communities generation after generation. Whether painting a rural valley in the nineteenth century or a small American town in the twenty-first, they are engaged in the same act of observation. They are asking us to pause, look closely, and consider what is worth remembering.

More than a century after George Hetzel and the painters of the Scalp Level School set up their easels along Pennsylvania streams and hillsides, artists continue to ask many of the same questions.

What is worth noticing?

What is worth remembering?

What places help tell the story of a community?

As our nation marks its 250th anniversary, those questions feel as relevant as ever. Across the country, artists are still turning their attention toward the towns, neighborhoods, landscapes, and everyday scenes that shape our lives. In doing so, they continue a tradition that stretches back generations, not simply recording places, but helping us see them more clearly.

In the next installment, we’ll explore how artists became visual historians, preserving communities and landscapes long after they changed, and why their paintings often become some of the most valuable records of the places we call home.
